John Brown, a butcher from AE Brown in Turriff in the North East of Scotland, has been awarded the Scottish Craft Butchers’ trophy for best white pudding – or mealie pudding as it’s better known in this neck of the woods – following a competition which attracted butchers from Jedburgh to Fraserburgh, from Cumbria to Shetland, which we were delighted to sponsor.
All entries were gathered at The Redgarth inn in Oldmeldrum before Christmas, to be judged by food industry experts, members of the Oldmeldrum Community Council and other local foodies. The best four were selected to be mystery shopped and when re-judged John Brown’s emerged as the best.
John Brown commented: “We have been making white puddings to the same recipe since my father started the business in 1957. We have not changed a single thing since it is a popular traditional recipe and a good seller. Customers come in to buy them to take away. We use as much Scottish produce as possible in all our recipes and the white pudding is no exception. Using Scottish oatmeal, onions and suet from beef supplied from Inverurie and then filled into natural casings ensures that only the best goes into our puddings.”
Tracey Gardner from Hamlyns, who was one of the judges, said: “Grampian Oat Products are delighted to continue our sponsorship of the Scottish Craft Butchers White Pudding competition. We love a traditional Mealie pudding, and were very impressed with the standard of entries from all over Scotland, and extend our congratulations to John Brown on his well deserved prize.”
