Could you be the next World Porridge Making Champion?

2019 World Porridge Making Championships

Carrbridge 11 – 12 October 2019

The countdown is on for the 26th Annual World Porridge Making Championships, held at the Village Hall in the Highland village of Carrbridge, an international competition which celebrates oats and porridge making.

Hamlyns of Scotland is delighted to confirm headline sponsorship once again.

Entries open on Sunday 10 March and close on 10 June.

Details of how to enter are available via the website

This year, for the first time, the competition will be spread over two days. Friday’s ‘Silver Spurtle’ competition (11 October) is reserved for young people aged 8-16, and Saturday’s ‘Golden Spurtle’ (12 October) is for adults.

Contestants on both Friday and Saturday will vie to produce the best ‘traditional’ porridge, made from oatmeal, water and salt only, and the best ‘speciality’ dish.

The winner of the adult traditional competition receives the Golden Spurtle, with the award of the Silver Spurtle going to the winner of the young person judged to produce the best traditional porridge.

Additional prizes are awarded to the winners of the speciality events.

Recipes for this year’s speciality competition will be closely-guarded secrets before the event.

The World Porridge Making Championships is a very international event, and this year’s Golden Spurtle will include entrants who are the national winners of porridge making competitions in Germany, Ireland, Russia and Sweden.

The championships are an excellent example of community-led local economic development. The organising committee is entirely voluntary, and is made up of Carrbridge residents, and aims to use the championships as a means to promote Carrbridge more widely.

The organising committee is delighted that Hamlyns of Scotland has renewed headline sponsorship, and they also welcome the increased commitment of Centurion Plumbing Services (Scotland) Ltd, who are sponsoring the Silver Spurtle competition.

Alan Meikle, Managing Director of Hamlyns said: “We are absolutely delighted to continue our support for what has become one of the highlights of the Scottish culinary calendar, and we can’t wait to see the line up for this year’s competition.”
