New Porridge Recipe Competition for Orkney Schools

Calling all Orkney teachers and pupils.  We are delighted that astrophysicist Simon Rookyard, the current World Porridge Making Champion, is going to be in Orkney in August to take part in the Orkney International Science Festival

We’re inviting schools across Orkney to take part in a competition, to help Simon create a new ‘Speciality Porridge’ recipe, which he will use when he defends his title in this year’s World Porridge Making Championships, which take place in Carrbridge in the Highlands, on Saturday 8th October.

Your porridge can be either sweet or savoury, and indeed entries are often more elaborate dishes with oats, rather than just porridge. The only stipulation is that it has to be made using oatmeal, rather than porridge oats. You can visit the event website goldenspurtle.com to see what some of the previous competitors have created.

Simon will be cooking his three favourite recipes during the Science Festival, and will announce the winning recipe during the event.

Hamlyns is delighted to sponsor this competition. The winning school will receive a £100 Amazon voucher and a set of Teach the Bairns Cookery books by Scottish cookery writer Liz Ashworth. The prize for the inventor is a Hamlyns teddy, apron, spurtle and a set of Teach The Bairns Cookery books.

Every participating school will receive a box of Scottish oat products and recipes from Hamlyns.

Please submit your recipe(s) by email to Liz Ashworth and Simon Rookyard before the end of term, so we can make up the shortlist during the summer holidays. Email addresses are: lizashworth@gmail.com and simon.rookyard@btinternet.com

Good luck!
